A classically trained pianist, Sapna Shah performed with orchestras and chamber groups from a young age. Born in the greater New York/New Jersey area, she moved to Santa Barbara, CA as a child. Raised in a uniquely international household, her initial contact with live musical instruments was from her Parsee grandmother who played the harmonium and veena. The Parsees of India are the same ethnic group of maestro Zubin Mehta and music legend Freddy Mercury. Listening to her grandmother playing the harmonium at home, Sapna began playing the piano, and was trained in Western classical music by several well known teachers, participating in master classes from a young age. Her secondary instrument is voice. After several years living abroad in Europe, she returned to teach music (piano, voice, theory, and appreciation) in California, and enrolled in the UCLA Film Scoring program to pursue her dream of composing for film and TV and conducting. In addition to piano and voice, Sapna also plays percussion instruments and composes for all genres of music and all instruments, and particularly loves composing and arranging orchestral, chamber, and jazz music, most especially for live musicians and music/TV scores.
